Course Description

The world’s population is growing, it is moving and intermixing, and it is increasingly found in cities. This course explores these changes and the challenges that come with them. It investigates the forces that are shaping the world’s communities, the patterns of interaction between them, the quality of life within them, and their impact on the world around them. Students will apply the concepts of geographic thinking, the geographic inquiry process, and spatial skills and technologies as they investigate issues related to population change and urban life and propose ways of enhancing the sustainability of communities around the world.

Unit 1: Geographic Inquiry and Skill Development (Ongoing)

Students will expand their understanding of the study of geography. This unit is meant to lay down the foundation for the rest of the course as students will be required to view the course material through the different geographical perspectives and concepts. Students will be introduced to the study of geography, mapping and research tools, geographical perspectives and various concepts. This Unit is ongoing as students will apply knowledge and skills gained to other contexts and concepts in the other units. 

Unit 2: Spatial Organization of Ecumenes 

In this unit students will learn about ecumenes. Students will learn about various factors and causes that contribute to the creation and inhabitation of ecumenes. Students will analyze and explore liveable communities. Students will explore local, national and international factors that contribute to the growth and development of communities. Students will explore a variety of land use patterns and trends of human settlement and communities. Students will learn about various reason and factors people choose to live in certain places. 

Unit 3: Sustainability and Stewardship 

This unit will focus on the human impact on the environment and ecumenes they settle in. Students will explore the political, environmental, economic and social consequences of human inhabitant on the environment and communities they live in. Students will also learn about how the government and individuals work to maintain the growth and development of communities.

Unit 4: Interdependence: Living in a Global Society 

This unit will focus on global population trends and the effects it has on various ecumenes around the world. Students will learn about various issues affecting communities and the way global communities can work together to address these issues. Students will learn about the importance of interdependence and collaboration of cities and countries around the world. 

Unit 5: Changing Ecumenes
    

The quality of life can vary greatly from one region to another. Students will analyze and explore the relationship between the quality of human life and the environments they inhabit. Students will explore various issues affecting human life and the environment. They will learn about and discover possible solutions to improve human life and the living condition. 

Unit 6: Independent Study Unit 

This last unit will allow students the flexibility to choose any topic within geography and world issues studies that they are interested in. For the ISU, students will have to conduct independent research on their topic, collect and analyze data as well as present a polished report of their findings.
