Course Description

The business leadership courses allow students to explore how managers function in organizations and take on the challenge of generating solutions in order to solve problems. These courses allow students to explore the roles, responsibilities, skills, and functions of management. Students will learn the factors that encourage effective leadership practices. Emphasis throughout the courses will be placed on the importance of ethics and social responsibility in the corporate world. Students will learn how to communicate effectively for business purposes. The courses in business leadership will prepare students to work effectively in organizations in positions of employment and management.

Unit 1: Foundations of Management

In this unit, student will assess the role of management within an organization, demonstrate the use of appropriate communication techniques related to business management, and evaluate the impact of issues related to ethics and social responsibility on the management of organizations.

Unit 2: Leading

In this unit, explore at human behaviour in the workplace. Student will learn about personality and evaluate the use of personality traits assessment instruments, and also examine how an individual’s attitude affects behaviour in the workplace. Lastly, student will examine leadership theories, leadership styles, and the qualities of an effective leader. 

Unit 3: Management Challenges

This unit will examine three major challenges that all managers face: motivation, communication, and stress. After examining the theories of motivation developed by Maslow, Herzberg, Alderfer, McClelland and Locke, student will explore motivational strategies used in the workplace.

Unit 4: Planning and Controlling

Student will discover the importance of planning to the success of an organization. Next, study the planning process and the role of creativity in planning and also discover the tools and strategies used in planning. By comparing Short-Term Planning and Long-Term Planning and use a time-management tool to examine their own time management. Other topics include the Strategic Planning Process, Types of Strategic Plans, and the management tools used in strategic planning.

Unit 5: Organizing

This unit will begin with a look at the four traditional organizational structures: functional, divisional, hybrid, and matrix. Then by looking at current organizational structures including team, network, boundaries organizations, and virtual organizations, student will examine the trends in organizational design including a shorter chain of command, decentralization, increased empowerment of employees, and organic structures.
